Academy Week 4 Recap
Week 4 of UCFD#1's Academy wrapped last week as the new recruits began transitioning from medical training into refining their firefighting skills.
The class kicked the week off with SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) familiarity to get comfortable with breathing through air masks on limited oxygen and with limited visibility (hence, the blacked out masks).
The District's onsite training facility, complete with a 4-story training tower, provided the perfect backdrop for conducting hose handling and RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) drills. DPSST Instructor and UCFD#1 Volunteer Firefighter Mike Bozeman stepped in to assist the academy in firefighting strategy.
RIT drills are crucial because they train firefighters on how to locate, assist, and rescue other trapped or injured firefighters. To simulate a real-world scenario, UCFD#1's training tower was filled with smoke from a smoke machine, providing limited visibility.
