UCFD#1 Uses Vacant Building for Fire Response Training
Once a popular stop for pies and comfort food, Shari’s opened its very first location off of Highway 395 in Hermiston back in 1978. In October of 2024, the restaurant permanently closed its doors and sat vacant.
This month, UCFD#1 crews had the unique opportunity to conduct simulated structural fire training in the uniquely shaped hexagonal building. The training focused on coordinated search and rescue, fire attack tactics, and navigating challenging interior conditions, skills essential to a real-world response. Utilizing a smoke machine in a real commercial structure provided a realistic environment for crews to sharpen decision-making, communication skills, teamwork, and life-saving techniques.
The scenario not only provided crews with essential training, but also made one young community member’s day. Lincoln and his aunt, who saw the engine whilst shopping, watched from their car as crews pulled hose and rescued training dummies. A handful of junior firefighter stickers, a fist bump from Firefighter Gibson, and an invite to the station later, Lincoln spent the whole ride home talking about becoming a firefighter and sending his mom videos about his special day.
